Brewing up Trouble
A vector based animation I created for my motion reel. This case study explores the use of smear frames and its effect on exaggerated movement.
Task:
Create a vector based animation that fits the audio.
Tools:
After Effects with Rubberhose 3, Illustrator
Problem
While I was creating my motion reel, I was missing a 3 second segment that fit the theme and rhythm of my chosen audio. I used this opportunity to get more familiar with Rubberhose 3 for after effects, and an animation technique I haven't used before.
Process
I started by sketching out keyframes of my animation on procreate and testing the timing of each frame. At this stage, I made sure to label my key frames as well as have elements on seperate layers so that I would have an easier time with vector artwork in the next step.
Initial Vectors and After Effects
In Illustrator, I created vectors of the most important assets to import into After Effects as shape layers. The arms were going to be generated with Rubberhose 3, so I kept the artwork simple until I was satisfied with the animation. I ran into a lot of trouble with the arms because I didn't have a good enough understanding of Rubberhose 3.
Refinement
With the limb troubleshooting out of the way, I moved on to animating the cauldron goo. I also decided to change some colours to add more contrast to the composition.
